Job Description

 The Railcar Mover Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of railcar moving equipment to position, transport, and spot railcars within industrial, terminal, or rail yard settings. This role ensures compliance with safety regulations, proper communication with ground crews, and accurate execution of customer and operational requirements. 

 

  • Equipment Operation : Safely operate railcar movers and associated equipment to move, couple, and position railcars as directed.

     
  • Railcar Handling : Spot railcars at designated locations for loading/unloading and assist with securing cars using hand brakes, chocks, and derails.

     
  • Safety Compliance : Adhere to all company, OSHA, FRA, and customer-specific safety procedures and protocols.

     
  • Communication : Maintain constant radio/hand signal communication with ground crew members to coordinate railcar movements.

     
  • Inspections & Maintenance : Perform pre- and post-operational inspections of the railcar mover; report any deficiencies or mechanical issues to supervisors.

     
  • Documentation : Accurately record railcar numbers, locations, and movements as required for operational and billing purposes.

     
  • Emergency Response : Respond promptly and appropriately to any abnormal situations or emergencies during operations.

     
  • Team Support : Assist with other yard or site tasks as assigned, including minor track or equipment maintenance.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

     
  • Frequent walking, climbing, bending, and standing for extended periods.

     
  • Hand-eye coordination to operate controls safely.
  • High school diploma or GED required.

     
  • Prior experience in rail yard, switching, or heavy equipment operation preferred.

     
  • Ability to understand and follow safety procedures and instructions.

     
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

     
  • Physical ability to climb railcars, work outdoors in varying weather, and perform manual labor as needed.

     
  • Valid driver’s license; CDL preferred

     
  • Must pass background check, drug screen, and physical examination.
