Job Description

CRL Associates, Inc.

Government Affairs Manager

Denver, CO

ABOUT CRL ASSOCIATES, INC.

CRL Associates is a Colorado-based public affairs and government relations firm founded in 1981. Headquartered in Denver, we work throughout the Denver metropolitan area and statewide, helping clients navigate complex public decision-making at the local, regional, and state executive levels of government.

We advise and represent clients on a wide range of issues, including land use and real estate development, energy, telecommunications, infrastructure and transit, housing, public-private partnerships, ballot issues, regulatory matters, and public policy.

CRL is known for a hands-on, execution-oriented approach grounded in deep knowledge of Colorado’s political and regulatory landscape and long-standing relationships with elected officials, government staff, and business and community stakeholders. We work on complex projects and issues where strategy, timing, and credibility matter.

ABOUT THE ROLE

CRL Associates is seeking a Government Affairs Manager to support our team on a wide range of client projects and public affairs initiatives. This is an entry-level position designed for motivated professionals seeking hands-on experience in public and government affairs. The role involves a mix of legislative and policy monitoring, meeting coverage, research, writing, and client-facing support, with increasing responsibility over time.

In this role, you will work closely with our team members while also handling independent assignments, including monitoring legislative and local government activity, preparing client-ready summaries, supporting community engagement efforts, and assisting with strategy and execution across active projects. You will gain direct exposure to high-profile issues, public decision-making processes, and client interactions from early on.

To be successful in this role, candidates should be detail-oriented, curious, show initiative, and be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where hard work is recognized, deadlines matter, and priorities can shift quickly.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Monitor legislative, regulatory, and government activity across assigned jurisdictions, including city councils, county commissions, boards and commissions, and state executive offices and departments.
  • Track and review agendas, staff reports, ordinances, resolutions, and related materials; identify items relevant to clients and internal teams.
  • Attend public meetings, hearings, and community meetings (including occasional evenings), and prepare clear, timely, and accurate written summaries for internal use and clients.
  • Support active client projects through research, writing, issue tracking, and coordination with internal team members.
  • Provide client-facing support, including participating in meetings, preparing materials, and following up on action items.
  • Maintain internal trackers, schedules, and databases that support client issues, legislative and community processes, internal functions, and overall project coordination.
  • Assist with community engagement and outreach efforts, including meeting coordination, preparation of materials, and documentation of feedback.
  • Build and maintain professional relationships with elected officials, government staff, community stakeholders, and client representatives through meetings, outreach, and ongoing project work.
  • Assist with tracking elections, ballot measures, and political activity relevant to clients and assigned jurisdictions.
  • Over time, take on increased individual responsibility for client matters, issues, and priorities with experience and earned trust.
  • Perform other duties as needed to support clients and the broader CRL team.

Given the nature of local government processes and public meetings, this role will require occasional evening meetings and/or extended hours, depending on meeting schedules and client needs.

KEY SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES

  • Writing and communication skills , with the ability to synthesize complex information into clear and useful materials for clients, government stakeholders, and community audiences.
  • Attention to detail and follow-through , particularly in written work, issue tracking, and meeting summaries.
  • Ability to learn quickly and adapt in a dynamic public affairs environment involving local policy, complex issues, elections, and community and stakeholder engagement.
  • Initiative and follow-through , with a willingness to take on responsibility and grow into the role as experience and trust are built.
  • Sound judgment and discretion when working with clients, elected officials, government staff, and sensitive issues.
  • Comfort building working relationships through meetings, outreach, and ongoing interaction.
  • Organizational skills , including the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines at once.
  • Proficiency with technology and new tools that improve how work is organized, analyzed, and communicated.

EXPERIENCE & BACKGROUND

  • 0–2+ years of experience in a field related to government affairs, public policy, government administration, regulatory matters, advocacy, or a comparable area.
  • College degree in a relevant or applicable field is preferred, but not required.
  • Writing samples or examples of relevant work may be requested as part of the application process.
