ABOUT BBB NATIONAL PROGRAMS’ CHILDREN’S ADVERTISING REVIEW UNIT

The Children’s Advertising Review Unit (CARU) is a self-regulatory program that, since 1974, has served both the business community and the public by seeking to sustain high standards of truth and accuracy through adherence to CARU’s self-regulatory guidelines. CARU seeks change through the voluntary cooperation of companies and where relevant, enforcement action. CARU monitors websites and online services for compliance with its Self-Regulatory Program for Children’s Advertising, it’s Self-Regulatory Guidelines for Children’s Online Privacy Protection, as well as with the federal Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

YOUR IMPACT

As an extern with CARU, you will help support responsible advertising to children. You will monitor advertisements, websites and online services, including mobile applications and generative AI, for compliance with CARU’s Advertising Guidelines, CARU’s Privacy Guidelines, and COPPA.

You will also assist CARU in monitoring regulatory and legislative actions relating to children’s advertising, children’s online privacy and data collection practices, as well as online safety.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Research and brief legal cases related to children’s advertising, children’s privacy and online safety.
• Research state and federal regulatory and legislative actions, as well as international regulatory frameworks related to children’s advertising, children’s privacy and data collection practices, and online safety.
• Research and curate content relating to children’s advertising, children’s privacy and online safety for newsletters, blog posts, and other external publications.
• Assist CARU with case monitoring and investigatory efforts, including but not limited to mobile application testing.
• Monitor and document CARU COPPA Safe Harbor Program participants’ compliance with COPPA.
• Assist with preparation and submission of annual regulatory compliance report.

Hours: Flexible

This externship is unpaid, but may be considered eligible for school credit
