Required Credentials and Training

To transport students with special needs in a school bus, you must have a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B and specific endorsements:

• CDL Class B: Required to operate most school buses, which are considered large commercial vehicles.
• Passenger Endorsement (P): Required to drive a vehicle designed to carry 16 or more passengers (including the driver).
• School Bus Endorsement (S): Required to operate a school bus. This involves extra written and driving tests and covers topics like school bus operation, student loading/unloading, and emergency evacuation.

Specialized Training

In addition to the standard CDL training, a driver working with special needs children will typically receive or be required to have specialized training which often includes:

• Operating Adaptive Equipment: Proficiency in using specialized equipment like wheelchair lifts and tie-downs to safely secure mobility devices.
• First Aid and CPR Certification: Many employers prefer or require current First Aid and CPR certification.
• Behavioral and Disability Awareness: Training on how to manage and support children with various physical, developmental, or cognitive disabilities, including implementing behavior management techniques and maintaining a structured routine.
• Health and Medical Awareness: Basic knowledge and the ability to assist with certain medical needs or emergencies, as determined by the students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) .
• Emergency Procedures: Training on unique evacuation procedures for students with mobility or sensory impairments.

️‍ Key Responsibilities

The primary responsibility is the safe and efficient transportation of students. However, for special needs children, the role is expanded:

• Safety and Securement: Operating the vehicle using a "Tender Loving Care (TLC)" driving style (smooth and slow movements) and ensuring that all passengers, wheelchairs, and adaptive devices are properly secured with seat belts, harnesses, and tie-downs.
• Student Assistance: Providing direct support to students during the boarding and disembarking process, which may involve physically assisting students or operating lifts.
• Behavior Management: Maintaining a safe and orderly environment on the bus, managing student behavior, and preventing disruptions. The driver often acts as a role model and is consistent and assertive in implementing conduct guidelines.
• Vehicle Maintenance: Performing pre-trip and post-trip safety inspections, reporting any mechanical issues, and maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of the bus, including specialized equipment.
• Communication: Effectively communicating daily with parents, school staff, and the bus attendant (if one is assigned) regarding any concerns, incidents, or special requirements for the students.
• Record Keeping: Maintaining accurate daily logs, including route information, student attendance, and incident reports.
